Worry & fear

Ba-Boom Goes Elephant's Heart

Elephant is the biggest animal in the jungle. He's also scared of almost everything: thunder, bees, squeaks and his own shadow (at least twice a week). So he crosses a wobbly plank to ask Pip, the bravest little bird he knows, for her secret. Her answer surprises them both.

For the child who hangs back, or asks "what if" at bedtime.

The trick inside: Pip's Brave Breath. Smell the flower, blow the seed, then take one small step.

Fizz-Fizz Goes Tiger's Temper

Tiger has a small volcano in his tummy. Most days it sleeps. But when someone pushes in, or a monkey throws berries at his face . . . FIZZ! FIZZ! KA-BOOM! So he sets off to ask Pebble, the calmest tortoise in the jungle, how to get rid of it. Her answer surprises them both.

For the child who roars when someone pushes in, then feels awful after.

The trick inside: Pebble's Shell Time. Tuck in, count to five, then say the feeling out loud.

Mistakes & perfectionism

Shiver-Shake Go Peacock's Feathers

Peacock has the most beautiful tail in the jungle. But he won't open it. Not unless it's PERFECT. Then, the day before the Big Dance, one small feather goes bent. So he asks Silk, the spider who spins perfect webs, for her secret. Her answer surprises them both.

For the child who crumples the drawing the moment one line goes wobbly.

The trick inside: Silk's Oops-a-Daisy Shake. Shake it out, shout "oops-a-daisy!", have one more go.

Shyness & big groups

Flip-Flop Goes Gibbon's Tummy

Every morning the gibbons sing the Morning Song. WHOOP! WHOOP! HOO-HOO-HOO! Every gibbon but one. Little Gibbon can sing. But when anyone listens, his tummy goes FLIP-FLOP and his song runs away. So he swings off to ask Honk, the loudest bird in the jungle, how to sing out.

For the quiet child who goes silent at parties, new classes and big groups.

The trick inside: Honk's Hum Hello. Hand on tummy, a small hum, one friendly face, one small thing said.

2Make them go!

3Breathe with Pip

Feeling wobbly? Do Pip's Brave Breath together. Watch the flower grow, then blow it away.

Ready when you are.

3 big breaths

Four tricks to try tonight

Each book teaches one. You can start with them before you own a single book. Say the steps out loud and do them together.

Pip's Brave Breath

for worry & fear
  1. Smell the flower. Breathe in slowly through your nose.
  2. Blow the seed. Breathe out slowly, like you're sending a dandelion seed floating away.
  3. Do it three times.
  4. Take one small step.

Pebble's Shell Time

for temper & anger
  1. Tuck in tight. Hug your knees and tuck your chin, like a tortoise in its shell.
  2. Count to five, slowly.
  3. Peek out and say it: "I feel cross because . . ."

Silk's Oops-a-Daisy Shake

for mistakes
  1. Shake it out. Wiggle your hands, your arms and your whole body, like Silk's eight legs.
  2. Shout "Oops-a-daisy!" as loud or as soft as you like.
  3. Have one more go.

Honk's Hum Hello

for shyness
  1. Hand on your tummy. Feel the flip-flop. It's allowed.
  2. Hum a small hum: mmmmm.
  3. Find one friendly face.
  4. Say or sing one small thing, just to them.

One page, big type, easy to point at when it's needed.

1 trick

Something to use

The animal learns the trick in the story, so your child has seen it work before they try it.

2 twists

A surprise on the page turn

The "brave" one, the "calm" one, the "perfect" one: each turns out to feel the same way.

Still

An honest ending

The feeling is still there on the last page. They do the brave thing anyway.

Dot

A ladybug to find

Dot hides on every single spread. Little fingers will find her before you do.

For you

Grown-up pages

Talking questions, the trick step by step, and a page to fill in together.

Why the feeling stays at the end

Elephant is still scared on the last page. He crosses anyway.

Lots of stories make the fear vanish by the end. These four keep it, on purpose. A child who learns that brave means the fear goes away feels they've failed the next time it doesn't.

A child who learns "I can feel it and still take one small step" has something to use at the school gate tomorrow morning. That's what every book is built around.
